Text Paintings

These paintings developed as a specific project related to my practice of reading fiction.
The project process:
  1. Notice the passages that stand out to me as meaning more to me personally than they are meant to mean in the context of the page.
  2. Present these passages outside of the context of the page without suggesting a specific interpretation of the text through visual design strategies such as emphasis or contrast. (i.e. Present the text in a straightforward manner.)
  3. Select fonts that do not draw attention to themselves. Use line spacing to achieve visual balance and perhaps a hint of emphasis.
  4. Fill the background with geometric or organic designs derived from letterforms.
Summary: Take the passages out of the context of the text; place them in a new context - one that is isolated from other words but alive with color and form. Consider the new context within the artwork in relation to the viewer and to the other passages presented in other paintings.
